The air vessel shown here acts as a damper to the suppress the pulses from the pump. As the piston forces water out, air is compressed in this vessel & then, as the piston gets to the end of it's stroke, the compressed air pushes water out of the discharge connection. Here, the vessel is being pressure tested, full of water, at 120 psi, twice it's normal working pressure.
